Edinburgh has a vibrant gay community. The Edinburgh gay scene is centred in the so-called Pink Triangle - Edinburgh's gay life is centred largely around the New Town's Broughton Street, although not exclusively. Edinburgh's gay scene has much to offer all year-round. Like the 'straight' scene, the Edinburgh gay bars change their themes often, and we hope here with our Edinburgh Gay Section, to keep you up to date with what's happening here. The numerous traditional tourist guidebooks attempt to create a directory of gay pubs and clubs in Edinburgh, which is usually limited.

As with the rest of the Edinburgh Pubs website, we welcome feedback from our visitors, and after studying the offerings of the various websites we have researched, we feel that all the sites that we have studied had some shortcomings. The contributors who have helped compile the Edinburgh Pubs Gay Section have many gay friends, who are active on the Edinburgh gay scene, and we hope they will keep us up to date on any new gay venues, pubs and clubs which should be included in the Edinburgh Pubs Gay Section. We hope that our Edinburgh Gay and Lesbian Pub and Club Guide will become the definitive gay pub and club guide for Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Lad Edinburgh has a great gay scene, but nobody comes to Edinburgh just for gay sex alone - there's too much else. Sixth century Edinburgh Castle, on a 250-foot rock in the centre of the city, dominates everything. If that's not enough, August's Edinburgh International Festival, the biggest arts and drama festival in the world covers theatre, music, dance, painting, photography, sculpture, and more. Simultaneously there is The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Edinburgh Film Festival and The Edinburgh Book Festival. If you're into art, summer is the time to come, but if so, book your bed well in advance, or perhaps you will find yourself in a sleeping bag in an Edinburgh park! If you come to Edinburgh by train, coach, or the bus from Edinburgh Airport, you will arrive on the Waverly Bridge near the Edinburgh Tourist Information Centre at the east end of Princes Street. Car parking in Edinburgh is expensive, and Edinburgh's gay scene is spread out, so it's worth getting bus timetables and bus passes which are good value from Lothian Region Transport at 14 Queen Street, Edinburgh or from the Ticket Centre at 31 Waverley Bridge, Edinburgh. Edinburgh's Royal Mile is a run of streets: From Edinburgh Castle is Castle Hill, followed by The Lawnmarket, The High Street and The Canongate. The Royal Mile slopes down a ridge to the east of the Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official residence in Scotland. The labyrinth of closes (small alleys) and cobbled streets off the Royal Mile are worth exploring. Many pubs - or "howffs" as they were called in the old Scots' tongue - have history going back hundreds of years. On the pavement outside Edinburgh's St. Giles Cathedral is the Heart of Midlothian, a heart shaped from cobble stones. It is considered good luck to spit on the heart as you walk past. To the north Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town is Princes Street and The New Town which is the largest complete Georgian residential area in Europe and has been awarded world heritage status by UNESCO. In The New Town you will find most of Edinburgh's gay pubs and clubs. Night cruising is concentrated around Calton Hill, just below the Royal Observatory, though cruising here for gay sex, is very much at your own risk. A fair amount of daytime cruising is also done in Princes Street Gardens, particularly during the Edinburgh Festival.
